The SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement: JoSE
Welcome Back, JoSE
These tumultuous times for teaching are complicated by contrasting concepts, such as civil discourse and civic discourse, debate and deliberation, as well as academic freedom and institutional neutrality.
After a two-year hiatus, the SUNY Journal of the Scholarship of Engagement (JoSE) returns to invite and share research on these and other concerns as they relate to K-16 educators.
JoSE expands its role as an educational platform by also –
- Nurturing scholarship among faculty and mentored students, who are welcome to submit their work and to serve as mentored reviewers.
- Contributing to SUNY’s leadership in this field. That leadership is evident, for example, in SUNY’s –
- General Education core competencies: Critical Thinking, Information Literacy (including Artificial Intelligence), and Civic Discourse.
- Academic Fellowships: Artificial Intelligence for Social Good; Civic Discourse and Civic Education; Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, and Social Justice, and Sustainability.
A sampling of research areas includes –
- Methodology. Ways of:
- Incorporating applied (experiential) learning-based civics education in, for example, Elementary Education, STEM, Performing Arts, the Trades, and interdisciplinary settings
- Conducting effective collaborations between colleges, government, business, and non-profits
- Incorporating civics education methodology into Teacher Education programs, so that our future teachers nestle civics education into their lesson plans - regardless of course content or grade level
- Creatively funding civics education events and programs
- Assessment of:
- Applied learning and civics education professional development programs
- Co-curricular civics education programming
- Reflection / White papers:
- The role of student protest in civics education
- Defining relationships between civil and civic discourse
In 2020, Dr. Laura Dunbar’s initiative launched JoSE. Although she is now pursuing other goals, her idea continues to evolve with JoSE’s 2025 re-launch.
My thanks to Dr. Dunbar and to our original Editors and Reviewers, and to JoSE’s new Editors and Reviewers – who welcome your research, white papers, book reviews, and letters to the editor, whether you are currently a scholar or are a budding scholar, and whether you are in or outside of the SUNY System.
We look forward to exploring, learning, and teaching with you.
Sincerely,
John Suarez
