Description

The topic I wanted to talk about with my students was regarding the risks associated with mixing alcohol and other drug. According to the American Addiction Centers (2022), mixing alcohol and drugs like Xanax can cause tiredness and reduced motor response, and the combination of these substances in any capacity can lead to unconsciousness and risk of coma.

I chose this topic because of the prevalence of drinking and rising use of opioids on college campuses. I wanted to give this information to students as I found that, unfortunately, it isn't common knowledge that these drugs shouldn't be mixed. The CDC determined that more than a quarter of ER visits for opioids and/or benzodiazepines also involved alcohol (Jones et al. 2014). The goal of my lesson was to give students information that could be helpful to them and perhaps even save a life.
