Winter Carnival officially began in 1948, though some evidence suggests it may have started as early as 1939. Early organization involved skiers, Dick Weeks and George Sengelaub, who helped steer the carnival events. Later, Coach of the Ski-Team, John MacPhee became involved in preparations and support. The carnival was a scheduled weekend for students during the winter months to enjoy casual competition and outdoor activities. These included ski-events, snow sculpture competitions, dog-sled races, ice-skating, and more. Many of these events involved group-based exercises and reinforced team building among the students. While the carnival officially began in 1948, this collection includes materials from 1955-1970.
