Description

The topic I chose to teach my lesson on was “Beyond the First Semester”. This lesson mainly focused on how students can begin to professionally develop themselves in order to succeed in Sport Management. I created this lesson to inform students of things I wish I knew as a freshmen that could have better set me up for the next 3 years in the SUNY Cortland Sport Management program. Discussing goal setting and how to build relationships/network will help students set a strong foundation to succeed for the future. A study done by Dr. Abram Anders is the Jonathan Wickert Professor of Innovation and Associate Director of the Student Innovation Center at Iowa State University found that social networking has only increased in importance for professional success (Anders, 2018). More so, it has been estimated that 60–90% of all professional jobs are obtained through networking (Anders, 2018). With that said, exploring both informal and formal networking techniques increases the likelihood that students will land job/internship opportunities in the future. Furthermore, there is a correlation between student employment success with goal setting and networking. University interventions to enhance student employability are most likely to be seen as effective by students when they target skill development and when they provide opportunities for networking (Clements & Kamau, 2018). Thus, when students set goals for themselves they are creating a structure to further progress toward their career aspirations while simultaneously making valuable connections.
