Description
I chose the topic of overall health and wellness because I believe it is very important for first year college students to be taking care of themselves mentally, emotionally, and physically. Being away from home for the first time is very exciting but can also be very scary. While some young adults may have been caring for themselves for a long time, many have not and they have relied on their parents for help with things like financial stability, being fed 3 meals a day, having a roof put over their head etc. As an only child coming to college and moving away for the first time, I had no idea what to expect, so I am hoping my topic has helped guide students so far in their time here at Cortland. I decided to cover this topic in order to educate my students on the importance of recognizing your mental emotional and physical struggles, as well as being able to effectively and safely navigate through them. While this is a stressful time, being sure to expose freshmen to the great strengths of Cortland including the Student Life Center, the wonderful academic departments and academic resources, can make their stress levels decrease. It may be hard for them to reach out to someone and ask for help or first year students may not know where to find a building or department, so I made sure to highlight topics like those in my presentation.
