The topic I chose was "SST and Study Abroad" because of the importance and impact studying abroad can have on their studies and career. International travel is important for students studying to be social studies teachers because it can enhance their curriculum and is a model for global citizenship (SUNY). As well as this, it allows them to navigate an understanding for different cultures and how to work with diverse groups (Why Study Abroad). For college students to gain firsthand experience with other cultures by visiting historical and geographical sites, as teachers they can gain a knowledge that moves instruction beyond the textbook and foster a greater sense of cultural awareness in their own future classrooms. Many of the students in my class were unaware of all the options and importance for studying abroad, so sharing my experience and the programs available for them helped them gain motivation to study abroad and be prepared for what to expect. The goal of my lesson was to share the importance of studying abroad, especially as students in the SST program and for them to be able to navigate how to find a program that best fits them.
