Description

The topic I chose to cover was how to find and utilize resources on campus. My lesson focused on the importance of using different support services and resources available here on the SUNY Cortland campus. I find it important to help students become familiar with the different academic, wellness, and personal support resources offered to them. By physically locating these places, students gained confidence in knowing where to go when they need assistance. Students often struggle in their first year because they do not know what help is available on the campus. Research shows that many first-year students face challenges during the transition to college because they are unaware of the support that exists. According to Davis et al. (2023), increasing awareness of student mental health and services is key to "reducing the stigma and improving utilization of care among college students." By understanding where to find these resources and how to access them, students can overcome some of the barriers that prevent them from seeking help when they need it.
