Abstract
Let’s talk trash for a minute. Are you aware of the monthly cost for the disposal of your household waste? Well, take that amount and multiply it a hundred-fold for a small business… Now imagine learning that as a business leader you could save a large percentage of the money you spend on waste disposal and possibly even make money selling it. As the saying goes, “one person’s trash is another person’s treasure”. To illustrate a variation of this concept scientifically the organization, Entrepreneurs for Sustainability (E4S), uses the term industrial ecology. In nature there is no concept of waste; everything that is waste from one organism is food to another. When applied to industry, this concept can identify ways to take one business’s waste and turn it into another business’s product. E4S has commited to a “Zero Waste by 2019” campaign and is encouraging organizational leaders to join a ZeroWasteNEO network to discover new ways to reduce their wastes. This is just one of the exciting sustainability practices being advanced by the E4S organization.
