Taproot: A Journal of Outdoor Education

Abstract

We provide outdoor education for 600 low-income students per year. We have a waiting list of teachers hoping to bring their classes every year, and there are thousands and thousands more that we cannot reach. Many days that feels like an overwhelming and impossible uphill battle. My hope is that we can figure out a way to help make outdoor education accessible to all children. At Vida Verde we watch these tough urban kids let down their guards for a couple of days. They let go of their baggage and they become children again. They paint their faces with mud, they lie down on the ground and look up at the redwood trees, they eat healthy food together as a class outside, they get their feet wet in the ocean, they touch farm animals and laugh together and sing together and dance. I believe all children deserve these experiences, and I believe that if we really want to safeguard the future of this planet, then all children need to be given the opportunity to connect to it in meaningful ways.
