James Harmon Hoose was the first principle of the College. He served from 1869-1891. Hoose was born in Warnersville January 21, 1836 and was a graduated from Genesee College 1861. After being dismissed by the Cortland Normal School in 1891 for controversial reasons, Hoose went on to live and work in Southern California. USC's Hoose Library is named in his honor.
