Deafness and Use of Sign Language: A Cross Cultural Survey

This survey examines the cross-cultural perspectives of Deafness and Sign Language. Thirty individuals residing in the United States and thirty individuals residing in South Korea ranging from the ages 18-64 participated in an online survey. Individuals residing in South Korea had greater negative perspectives of Deafness and were more likely to use sign language as their child’s primary mode of communication than individuals residing in the United States. Individuals living in the United States may have a more positive perception towards Deafness resulting from a greater awareness of alternative communication modalities. Individuals residing in South Korea may appear to have a more positive perception of sign language due to the lack of awareness of alternative communication modalities.
