Description
(2E, 6E)-farnesyl diphosphate synthase (FPPS) is an α-helical enzyme involved in the final step of mevalonate pathway (MVA) of isoprenoid biosynthesis. MVA is an essential pathway involved in the formation of various molecules such as cholesterol, dolichol, and CoQ10 which are fundamental molecules in eukaryotic cells. FPPS catalyzes the condensation reaction of dimethylallyl diphosphate (DMAPP) and isopentyl diphosphate (IPP) to form farnesyl diphosphate (FPP). In recent studies, FPP has been found to be an allosteric inhibitor of the enzyme FPPS, providing a potential application for cancer treatment. In this infographic, the reaction mechanism of DMAPP and IPP along with the enzyme’s structure and kinetic data are presented.
